Safety at the Beach

After our beach education trip we wrote some explanations to inform others about keeping safe, which is especially important with the school summer holidays coming up.

How to Stay Safe on the Beach

Always stay safe on the beach by being sun safe and keeping to the rules in the water.

First of all it’s crucial to wear a full brimmed hat to protect yourself by using shade. Most people wear caps to look cool, however caps don’t provide as much protection as full brimmed hats. Sunglasses are optional, but help protect your eyes. If you have sunglasses I suggest you wear them!

It is super important to have fun, but when you forget your sun safety you could get burnt. You need to put sunscreen on your limbs, face and neck. You can also put on lip balm to protect your lips. Remember to wear long sleeves so that your arms don’t get burnt in the sun. Also a collar will protect your neck.

In the sea you should never swim out of the flags because it could be very deep and you could fall over and drown. Never swim without an adult watching over you otherwise you could get pushed out into the sea. If you need help and you are in a deep place then do a starfish on your back with your hand up so you save energy. Also listen to the lifeguard’s signals so you know which direction to go. If you think there is a big wave and you might drown run back to the highest surface. If you want to go a little deeper in the water get an adult to go with you, so if you get into trouble they’ll be there to help you. Never go past the flags otherwise the current could push you back and forward and drown in the bottom of the sea.

The beach is a delightful place, but you need to be safe!

Knox Church Concert...

We were all very proud of the Year 3-4 children for their amazing singing in the Knox Church last night.  Thank you Ms Ashby for organising this and to Ms Emeleus and Mr Searle for the beautiful music!

Beach Education Day...

What fun we had at South New Brighton Beach learning about how to be safe at the beach.  The weather was amazing and although the water was a little chilly, we all got in and had a great time!  We now know many ways to keep ourselves safe at the beach - see if we can tell you some of the ways, by talking to us about our trip.  Many thanks to the parent helpers who joined us on the trip.

Penguins...

We made these cool penguins in Art using plastic water bottles.  It was a lot of fun and they look awesome!

Dry Ice

Georgia from Room 21 brought some dry ice to school. The children observed what happened when dry ice was put into warm water. We talked about how dry ice can cause serious burns if it touches you and you have to wear strong leather gloves to touch it.

The challenge for the children is to find out about dry ice over the weekend to share with the class on Monday.

Athletics Day

We had near perfect weather for the year 2 and 3 athletics day - not too hot or too cold! The children all did really well and should be proud of their successes. Having spent most of the day on the high jump event I wasn't able to get any photos of the children, so please send along any good ones you have and we will add them to the blog.

Light

Today we had to try to bounce a beam of light around an object using mirrors. It was quite tricky trying to get the angles of the mirrors correct to reflect the light in the right direction.

Some children managed to bounce the light around two objects before shining it on the vehicle.
